New Catalog Connector: Introducing Data.JSON Metadata Federation
We know that some data-sharing governments use a variety of tools to host their open data resources, such as when an organization uses Socrata to share a majority of open data, but ArcGIS Open Data or CKAN for a specific departments’. While this may make sense for an organization overseeing various departments’ data sharing programs, it can make discovering open data - to data users - very challenging. Open data users want your organization’s data available, searchable, and browsable in one place.
Previously, Administrators have been able to set up a data federation relationship from other Socrata sites and ArcGIS Server instances, allowing metadata from those assets to be discoverable from within your Socrata data catalog. Now, with the release of the new Data.JSON Metadata Connector, you can federate metadata from a wide variety of external data catalogs - ArcGIS Open Data catalogs, CKAN catalogs (with the data.JSON extension), and many more!
The data.JSON standard is a common API endpoint for open data catalogs, which we are leveraging from the U.S. Project Open Data metadata schema standards. This endpoint, typically available at https://yourdatasite.gov/data.json, provides a full data catalog’s metadata in one standard format.
With this new data.JSON Metadata connector, you can now quickly and easily federate select (or all!) data resources from other catalogs to live alongside your other Socrata data assets as external links, making it easy for your users to find what they are looking for and go straight to the source of the data. Discovering your data has never been so easy!
