Importing Geospatial Files (Classic Import)

Want the latest and greatest? Check out our New Geospatial Import Experience!

Before you import: Requirements for your geospatial file

  • Make sure your file is one of the following supported upload formats: .kml, .kmz, or .zip (ESRI shapefile) or GeoJSON
  • If an ESRI shapefile, the .zip should have these files - .shp (can have multiple), .dbf (can have multiple), .lyr, .prj.
  • Ensure the geospatial does not contain 3 or 4 dimensional values (Z and M) and only has X and Y coordinates.

Note: If you want to have multiple layers on your map, you will need to zip all the layers into one zip file BEFORE you upload.

The Import Process

  1. Log into your account on the Socrata powered site, and make sure that you have the appropriate permissions to upload data (Administrator, Publisher, or Editor)
  2. From the Create dropdown, select 'Dataset' and choose Opt out to access the classic import workflow.
  3. From there, you will be taken to a variety of options for upload, select “Import Geospatial Data”Screen_Shot_2017-02-27_at_2.15.51_PM.png
  4. Click “Upload a file” and find the geospatial file in your computer
  5. You will see the screen “Specify how the file should be imported” with the layers in the file. Rename the layers if necessary and click “Next”.
  6. Enter in the appropriate metadata on and click “Next.”
  7. After the dataset has been imported and processed, click “Finish”
  8. You will be directed to a map with the layers you just imported.

Note: If you have uploaded more than one layer, in the upper right-hand corner you will see the different layers with checkboxes and sliders. From here you can select to view or not view each layer through the check box, or control the opacity of each layer through the slider bar.

Q. Can I add customizations like flyouts to geospatial file maps once they are imported?

Currently the styling and cartography for geospatial layers are not customizable. Files should be customized prior to import. For information on how to customize flyouts for maps powered by tabular datasets, follow this link.
