Exploration Canvas Beta Program Overview

The Exploration Canvas is a brand new platform surface for data exploration, data shaping, and derived view creation. It arrives as a beta experience on select Data & Insights domains in June 2021.

This article contains information on the Beta Program. For details about the Exploration Canvas itself, please visit this article.

Beta Program Details

  • Limited Release: The Exploration Canvas will debut on Enterprise Data Platforms in June 2021. Over subsequent months, the Exploration Canvas will begin to appear on Open Data domains, and reach General Availability in 2022.

  • Opt-In: During the beta, users can choose when and whether to utilize the Exploration Canvas, without it impacting their existing workflows. (See “Accessing the Exploration Canvas” below.)

  • Living Beta: Users will see updates shipped to the Exploration Canvas on a regular basis (i.e. weekly). These will be accompanied by release notes.

  • Backwards Compatible: Views created using the Exploration Canvas can also be loaded in the Grid View.

Accessing the Exploration Canvas

This “Beta” banner appears when an asset is compatible with the Exploration Canvas. It displays on asset primer pages, in the Grid View, and in within the current Grid View’s SoQL Query Editor (when applicable).

Click “Try it Now” to open the asset in the Exploration Canvas. Otherwise, click the “x” to dismiss these reminders for the duration of your session.

Living Beta

The Exploration Canvas continues to undergo active development. Rather than hold back improvements - like feature enhancements, or even bug fixes - we will ship updates on a regular cadence, typically weekly. Keep up with changes by checking out our Beta Release Notes and Beta Known Issues.

Upcoming Functionality

The same basic data exploration and data shaping functionality currently offered in the Grid View will be available in the Exploration Canvas as soon as it arrives in June 2021. However, even more exciting features are actively being built, and will be added to the Exploration Canvas over the course of regular updates.

This chart indicates what to expect, using the current Grid View as a reference:
