October Platform Enhancements and Updates

Data Exploration and Publishing

Exploration Canvas Open Beta

We are excited to bring a brand new surface to Open Data domains: the Exploration Canvas! The Exploration Canvas is an updated answer to the Grid View - taking tabular data exploration, data shaping, and derived view creation on our platform to the next level. By raising the standard for performance, functionality, and ease of use across these various activities, we envision a future where you’ll rely on it as your preferred data exploration and shaping surface.

As a beta feature, the Exploration Canvas is available on an opt-in basis. If you are an Open Data domain administrator and would like to learn more about using the Exploration Canvas on your domain, please reach out to our Support Team.

Schema Change Warning in Data Management Experience

Keeping datasets accurate and up-to-date sometimes requires schema changes, like adding or removing a column from a dataset. Derived assets which depend on a specific dataset column can be impacted by these changes - they may no longer display properly, or have a different meaning when a column is changed. The dataset updating workflow now warns users when their changes may be impacting dependent assets, helping users avoid unknowingly breaking downstream views.

Managing Metadata Templates Beta

In this release, we’ve launched the first wave of a series of enhancements to managing and updating metadata in the Socrata platform. This beta release includes a visual update to the administration page, the ability to make any metadata field required on a domain, and a new audit feature that allows administrators to identify assets that are missing required metadata fields after an update. Administrators that opt into the beta can access the new experience in the Metadata Administration page. Please contact our Support team if you are interested in joining the beta program.

Perspective Story Enhancements

New table

We are proud to introduce a brand new table in Stories! We are replacing the current “Insert a Table” option in Stories with a table visualization available within the visualization canvas. You now have complete control over what columns and data are available in your Stories. Allow users to look at your data differently through the use of table hierarchies. With a more interactive view, users can better understand the data and derive insight from it, without changing the underlying data!

New flexible Perspectives Story Canvas Beta

Stories are becoming more flexible and dynamic in their layout! You now have the ability to drag and drop components into the Story Canvas, resize and rearrange them as needed! We are also offering a larger content width option so that your Story content fits the entire space. No longer are you be confined to the pre-selected content block options; instead, you have more control over the layout of your Story!

The rollout of this functionality will begin in January 2022, with a limited beta program for a small set of customers. In mid-2022, this new layout will reach general availability for all Perspectives Story users.

Please contact our Support team if you are interested in joining the beta program.

Deprecations

Due to Microsoft’s announcement that O365 will drop support for Internet Explorer 11 in August of 2021 and support for the desktop application will end on June 15, 2022, Socrata decided to end support for IE11 beginning on June 21, 2021.

On October 18, 2021 we will end all support for Internet Explorer on the Socrata platform. At that time, any issues that only appear in Internet Explorer will no longer be fixed, regardless if this causes loss of functionality. Users will still be able to access the Socrata platform after this time, but as the platform evolves beyond the capabilities of IE, users will likely begin to experience issues that will degrade their experience.

Please see this support article for more details: End of Support for Internet Explorer 11
