Grid View Removal

Overview

The legacy data shaping surface known as Grid View will be removed from all data platform in January 2025. Since the time Grid View was introduced into data platforms, we have built tools like Exploration Canvas, the updated Overview Page, and the Visualization Canvas that align more closely with the way users are interacting with our platform. We are excited to upgrade all users to these more modern and robust tools.

The removal of Grid View includes several other changes and removals of asset types that rely on Grid View to render. Below you will find an exhaustive list of impacted assets and functionality, along with support articles to aid in the upgrade to newer and more power platform functionality.

Assets Types Pending Removal

Unless specified elsewhere, all legacy charts, maps, and forms that rely on Grid View to render will be removed from data platforms in January 2025. These asset types have been deprecated and unsupported since 2022 or earlier.

Legacy Visualizations

Legacy charts and graphs rely on Grid View to render, and have been replaced on data platforms with Visualization Canvas charts and graphs since 2022. These legacy assets can be identified by the menu on the right side of the screen just above the visualization itself (see red arrow in image below).

Forms

Forms are no longer a supported asset type on data platforms. For users who would like to support a data collection workflow on their data platform, we recommend embedding a Microsoft or Google form into a Perspective’s Story. More information on that process can be found in this support article: https://support.socrata.com/hc/en-us/articles/27101273671703-Embedding-Forms-In-a-Perspectives-Story

Impacted Functionality

Datasets and filtered views that open in Grid View now will open in Exploration Canvas moving forward. Users will see more and more of their assets opening in Exploration Canvas by default leading up to the January 2025 removal date. While the majority of upgraded assets will not be visibly impacted, some assets will see a change in behavior. These changes are outlined below:

Asset Functionality

Views with conditional formatting

When datasets and filtered views with conditional formatting are upgraded, they will lose their conditional formatting. Conditional formatting will no longer be supported in our data shaping surfaces, and is now supported more thoroughly in our table visualizations in Visualization Canvas.

Learn more about formatting in table visualizations here.

Views with hidden columns

When views with hidden column are upgraded, they will lose their hidden columns. Any columns that are hidden on a view will be removed from the SELECT statement powering that view, and no longer available moving forward. Users will now be able to manage column visibility when viewing data via the column manager menu on the Overview Page and in the table visualization.

Platform Functionality

Single Row and Rich List

Singe Row and Rich List are different viewing options for the data table in Grid View. Moving forward, neither of these view modes will be supported.

Discuss

The Discuss feature will no longer be supported on data platforms. Any comments left in Discuss will no longer be available after an asset is upgraded.

Embed

The embed functionality currently available to users in Grid View is being moved to the Overview Page. Moving this functionality ensures users will not see a disruption to their embeds during this upgrade, and also enables us to continue building data table functionality into embeds moving forward. Read more about the new embed tool here: Introducing the New Data Embed Tool.
